| Right then, fancy a bit of an escape? I recently had the absolute pleasure of embarking on a rather spectacular ten day jaunt through Botswana and Zambia, a safari experience that was less ‘roughing it’ and more ‘being utterly pampered while nature does its thing’. Honestly, if your idea of roughing it involves a thread count lower than 800, this might not be for you. The whole affair felt rather like stepping into a glossy magazine, only with significantly more elephants. We started in Botswana, specifically the Okavango Delta. Picture this: you’re gliding along in a mokoro, a dugout canoe, serenaded by the gentle lapping of water and the distant trumpeting of an unseen pachyderm. Except this mokoro wasn't the slightly wobbly sort you might imagine. Ours was practically a floating armchair, piloted by a chap who knew the delta like the back of his impeccably manicured hand. Our accommodation was, and I say this with a deep sigh of contentment, sublime. Think sprawling tented camps that would make a maharaja blush. Private plunge pools overlooking watering holes, butler service that anticipated your every need before you even knew you had it, and food so exquisite you’d swear a Michelin star chef had set up a temporary kitchen in the bush. I distinctly recall a sundowner cocktail, served on a deck with a pride of lions just a stone’s throw away. Naturally, I kept my distance, but the sheer thrill of it all, coupled with the perfectly chilled gin and tonic, was a moment I won’t soon forget. The game drives were, of course, the main event. And oh, what an event they were. We saw more wildlife than I thought existed outside of a David Attenborough documentary. Majestic lions lounging in the shade, leopards draped artfully over trees (honestly, the effortless style of some animals is just infuriating), and herds of zebras and wildebeest thundering across the plains. Our guides were encyclopedic in their knowledge, pointing out the tiniest dung beetle with the same reverence they’d reserve for a rare bird. It’s humbling, really, to be so in awe of the natural world, especially when you’re doing it from the comfort of a specially adapted, open top 4x4 with a cooler full of ice cold drinks. Then came Zambia, and the mighty Victoria Falls. Now, I’d seen photos, naturally, but nothing prepares you for the sheer, raw power of ‘The Smoke That Thunders’. The mist rising from the falls creates a perpetual rainbow, and the roar is deafening. We experienced it from the ground, from various viewpoints, and even had a rather exhilarating helicopter ride overhead. Seeing that colossal curtain of water from above is an experience that burrows deep into your soul. It makes you feel incredibly small, yet strangely invigorated. This wasn't just a holiday; it was an immersion. An exclusive, pampered immersion into some of the planet’s most breathtaking landscapes and incredible creatures. It’s the kind of trip that makes you reevaluate your priorities, mostly involving how to secure a return ticket. If you’re looking for an adventure that marries unparalleled luxury with the wild heart of Africa, then a Botswana and Zambia safari is, without a doubt, an absolute stunner. And yes, I came back feeling rather spoiled, and rather eager to plan the next one. |
