Exploring luxury safaris in AfricaA lighthearted story from a luxury beach & Safari in Seychelles.
Although it reads like a sentence from a travel marketer who has had too much coffee, a luxury safari in the Seychelles sounds like it would work. I came half hoping for either a sun lounger with a little umbrella in my drink or a khaki-clad jeep scenario. What I discovered was far more fascinating and somewhat disturbing since it permanently changes your expectations. First of all, the fauna. Although I did briefly scan the horizon looking for a lion, a safari here is not about dramatic chases across arid deserts. It is about intimate experiences that feel subtly unique rather than about the islands having welcomed you into a secret. Confident animals aware they will outlive you and your career aspirations, massive Aldabra tortoises stroll about. It's kind of grounding to see them slowly chomp on leaves. I aimed to imitate their cool but failed within minutes. Then there's the marine safari component, which in the Seychelles is absolutely essential. You dive or snorkel in water so clear it seems unreal, like someone cranked up the contrast too much. Reef sharks pass by nonchalantly, manta rays resemble underwater spaceships, and tropical fish display hues that would be regarded as inappropriate on land. While suspended over a coral garden, I had a brief existential moment questioning why I would ever choose to voluntarily read emails.
The islands themselves are almost like a safari. Verdant jungles turn to granite boulders resembling those dropped by a negligent giant. Guided walks let you see rare birds flit about in reserves, and you find yourself muttering for no good reason, just because it seems respectful. Luxury lodges fit into the surroundings so nicely that you sometimes forget you are spending a little fortune for the honour of not seeming like a visitor. Speaking of luxury, the safari gets sensuous here. Following a morning tracking animals or kayaking among mangroves, you arrive back to a villa with a private pool and someone who knows your name, your preferred drink, and perhaps your soul. Dinners are candlelit events on the beach with food that makes you reevaluate every quick meal you have ever eaten. I realised I had been gone too long when I caught myself calling a dessert life-changing. However, the balance is what really stands out. The Seychelles safari is not about checking boxes or flaunting achievements. It's about slowing down enough to see things, like how the light changes over the water or how fast worry vanishes from your body when shoes become optional. I set out in search of luxury and excitement. I left with a dark tan, a clearer head, and the unpleasant understanding that back home, I will never view a tortoise without a trace of jealousy. |
