| Right then, so you've somehow managed to snag yourself a rather spiffing 15 day escape, whisking you away from the drizzly Tuesdays of home to the sun baked plains of Botswana, the thunderous roar of Victoria Falls, and the spice scented breezes of Zanzibar. Fancy! If you're anything like me, the idea of "roughing it" usually involves a slight delay on the motorway and forgetting to pack a decent book. So, thankfully, this isn't that kind of adventure. This is the "champagne on ice, followed by a sundowner overlooking a pride of lions" kind of adventure. Let's start with Botswana. Imagine this: you're not crammed into a Land Rover with a gaggle of strangers. Oh no. You're in a beautifully appointed, open sided vehicle, probably with your own personal guide who knows every single wildebeest by name. Your accommodation? Think plush tents, but not the sort you struggled with at scouts. These are more like glamorous suites with four poster beds, en suite bathrooms (with actual running hot water, thank heavens), and staff who seem to anticipate your every need before you even realise you have one. Mornings will involve a gentle wake up call, perhaps with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee delivered to your tent flap. Then, off you go to witness the Okavango Delta, a shimmering labyrinth of waterways. You might glide through on a mokoro, a traditional dug out canoe, spotting hippos and exotic birds. Evenings are for tracking the Big Five, with the expert guidance of your tracker who’ll point out a leopard casually draped over a branch, looking utterly unbothered by your presence. Honestly, it's enough to make you feel like a rather important explorer, albeit one with very comfortable shoes. From the wildlife wonderland of Botswana, we jet off to the quite literally breathtaking Victoria Falls. Now, "falls" doesn't quite do it justice. It’s a colossal curtain of water, thundering down with a force that vibrates through your very bones. You can choose to marvel from the designated viewing points, getting delightfully misted, or, for the truly daring (and those with the good sense to have packed waterproofs), perhaps a helicopter ride overhead. Imagine seeing that raw power from above, a truly humbling experience. After all that natural drama, it's back to civilisation, or at least, a rather luxurious civilisation. Finally, we land on the spice island of Zanzibar. Think turquoise waters lapping at white sand beaches, historic Stone Town with its labyrinthine alleyways, and the intoxicating scent of cloves and cinnamon hanging in the air. Your accommodation here will be equally exquisite, perhaps a beachfront villa with your own private plunge pool. Spend your days exploring the vibrant markets, learning about the island's rich history, or simply indulging in some serious relaxation. I'm envisioning long afternoons with a good book and a cocktail that’s far too colourful to be healthy, with the gentle rhythm of the waves as your soundtrack. This isn't just a holiday; it's an immersion into the extraordinary. It’s about experiencing the wild in absolute comfort, witnessing wonders that will stay with you long after the tan has faded. It's the sort of trip that makes you reevaluate your definition of "essential" and might just make returning to reality feel a tad… beige. But hey, at least you’ll have some absolutely cracking stories to tell. And perhaps a newfound appreciation for good gin and tonic. Cheers to that! |
