| Right then, let's talk about an experience that's less "roughing it" and more "refined indulgence." I recently had the pleasure of spending three days at the a'zambezi River Lodge, right on the banks of the mighty Zambezi, and let me tell you, it was less of a safari and more of a ridiculously comfortable wildlife viewing party. Forget dusty tents and rationing water. This was pure, unadulterated luxury with a side of astonishing nature. My "accommodation" was less a room and more a personal sanctuary, a sprawling suite with views that would make a postcard jealous. Imagine waking up to the gentle murmur of the river, the scent of exotic blossoms, and knowing that your biggest decision of the morning is whether to have your coffee on your private deck or in the impossibly plush lounge. It’s the kind of place that makes you question your life choices that didn't involve this level of pampering. Day one was all about settling in and getting acquainted with the gentle giants. We started with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi. Now, I'm not usually one for organised boat trips, preferring to feel like a rugged explorer. But this was different. We glided along in a sleek, elegant vessel, cocktail in hand, as the sun painted the sky in a riot of oranges and purples. Hippos lounged in the shallows, seemingly unfazed by our presence, and I swear I saw a crocodile wink at me. It was like a nature documentary, only I was inside it, and the canapés were exceptional. The real star of the show, of course, is Victoria Falls. And let me tell you, no amount of photographs or documentaries can prepare you for the sheer, unadulterated power of it. We took a guided tour, and our guide, a chap with an encyclopedic knowledge of the local flora and fauna, made it utterly fascinating. The spray from the falls, aptly nicknamed "The Smoke That Thunders," is invigorating, if a little damp. I found myself just standing there, mouth agape, feeling utterly insignificant and yet completely alive. It’s humbling, really, to witness such raw natural energy. Day two offered a different kind of thrill: a game drive. Again, think less bouncing along in a rickety jeep and more a comfortable, open sided vehicle with ample space and a knowledgeable guide. We were incredibly lucky. Within the first hour, we’d spotted a herd of elephants, their massive forms moving with surprising grace. Then came the giraffes, elegant and impossibly tall, munching nonchalantly on leaves. And yes, we even saw a pride of lions lounging in the shade. My inner child was screaming with delight, while my adult self was busy appreciating the comfortable seating and the fact that I didn’t have to worry about fending off any rogue mosquitoes. It’s quite a surreal experience, observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, knowing you’re perfectly safe and well looked after. The evenings were equally delightful. The lodge offers incredible dining experiences, from al fresco meals under a canopy of stars to more formal dinners in elegant settings. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of local flavours and international sophistication. I found myself reflecting on how far we’ve come from the days of packing my own lukewarm sandwiches for a day out. This was an upgrade in every conceivable way. Day three was a chance for a final dose of Zambezi magic. Perhaps a leisurely walk around the lodge grounds, spotting some colourful birds, or simply enjoying one last G&T by the river. It’s the kind of trip that leaves you feeling rejuvenated, impressed, and with a slight longing to return to a life of unparalleled comfort amidst untamed beauty. If you’re looking for a safari that prioritises luxury without compromising on the awe inspiring spectacle of nature, then the a'zambezi River Lodge might just be your perfect escape. It certainly was mine. |
