A light-hearted experience on a Luxury Honeymoon Safari in South Africa There are honeymoons, and then there are honeymoons that make you look at your spouse and say, "Well... this is going to be tough to surpass." South Africa's opulent honeymoon safari fit rather naturally in the second division. A safari seems a little rough at first for a honeymoon. You can imagine grimy boots, khaki shirts, and a terrible dearth of good coffee. Before leaving, I really anticipated a lot of early mornings and maybe bickering about who got to hold the binoculars. We discovered something more like a five-star wilderness retreat, where the wildlife was just amazing instead. Luxury safaris are something South Africa is really good at. Many lodges are intimate, tiny, and nestled amid some of the nation's most beautiful reserves. You rise to the subdued noises of the bush, stroll out onto a private balcony with a cup of coffee, and see giraffes strolling past as if they own the place. To be fair, they perhaps do. One's daily routine may easily become a habit. Early morning game drives feel a bit like entering a nature film. One minute you are peacefully following elephant trails through the bush as your guide explains the terrain with remarkable cool, then the next you are seeing a pride of lions stretch lethargically in the sun. You are sitting cosily wrapped in a blanket the entire time, questioning how this qualifies as an activity rather than just a luxury. You then go back to the lodge, and the luxury goes on. Breakfast magically emerges. Later, a spa treatment, a swim looking out over the savannah, or just a sleep in the afternoon feels perfectly acceptable because, technically speaking, you did go leopard hunting at dawn. Evenings might be the highlight. Usually dinner is served by a fire beneath a star-filled sky. The wine flows freely, the cuisine is superb, and the vibe is quite laid-back. It is the kind of place that inspires lazy chats, lots of laughs, and the occasional moment when you both go silent as the Milky Way becomes very distracting. A luxury honeymoon safari in South Africa mixes comfort with adventure in a way that feels shockingly natural. It is really unique, somewhat wild, and romantic. Just heads up. Returning to normal vacationing can seem a little disappointing after seeing elephants at sunset with a champagne glass in hand.
