| Right then, fancy a bit of a splurge? If you’re anything like me, the thought of roughing it probably makes you shudder. So, imagine this: thirteen glorious days of pure indulgence, kicking off in the utterly magnificent Cape Town, meandering along the picturesque Garden Route, and culminating in a seriously swanky safari at Amakhala. Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? And let me tell you, it absolutely is. Cape Town. Where do you even begin? We're talking about a city that’s just bursting with life, style, and views that’ll make your jaw drop. Forget queuing for hours; your accommodation will be more like a private villa with a butler who knows your coffee order before you do. Think stunning ocean vistas from your suite, private chefs whipping up culinary masterpieces, and perhaps a personal chauffeur to whisk you away to Table Mountain. You can ascend it in a cable car, naturally, or for the truly adventurous (and perhaps slightly more energetic than I was after a particularly delightful breakfast), there are guided hikes. Just don't expect me to be trailing behind, huffing and puffing. I prefer to observe wildlife from a comfortable distance, preferably with a glass of something chilled in hand. From Cape Town, we embark on the legendary Garden Route. This isn't your average road trip, mind you. We're talking private transfers, stopping at charming boutiques for curated shopping experiences, and maybe a helicopter tour over the Knysna Heads just because you can. Picture yourself staying in opulent guesthouses nestled amongst ancient forests, the air alive with the scent of fynbos. You’ll explore quaint coastal towns, indulge in world-class wine tastings – a necessity, obviously and perhaps even take a leisurely boat trip. I confess, the idea of a 'leisurely' anything is very appealing. My ideal pace involves minimal effort and maximum enjoyment. And then, the grand finale: Amakhala Game Reserve. This is where the "exclusive luxury safari" truly comes into its own. Forget crowded jeeps and questionable camping gear. Here, it's all about private game drives with expert rangers who are more like personal wildlife concierges. Imagine tracking lions from your open-top safari vehicle, a perfectly chilled bottle of South African wine within easy reach. Your lodge will be the epitome of comfort and style, with plunge pools overlooking watering holes where elephants might just wander by for a tipple. Evenings are for gourmet meals under the African stars, accompanied by the distant calls of wildlife. It’s a far cry from my usual Friday night takeaway, and honestly, I'm not complaining. What I love most about this kind of trip is the effortless elegance of it all. Everything is handled. You’re not worrying about logistics; you’re simply soaking it all in. It’s a chance to disconnect from the everyday hustle and reconnect with nature, albeit in the lap of luxury. It makes you realise that 'roughing it' is entirely subjective. For some, it’s sleeping in a tent. For me, it’s probably anything that requires me to tie my own shoelaces more than once a day. This safari, however, is pure, unadulterated bliss, from the first sip of champagne in Cape Town to the last sundowner on the savannah. And isn't that what holidays are all about? |
