Right then, let's talk about a holiday that’s frankly a little bit naughty, in the best possible way. Imagine this: seven days tracking down the Big Five on a super exclusive safari, followed by a complete chill-out on a ridiculously beautiful beach. I recently had the immense pleasure of experiencing just that, and honestly, my perception of ‘holiday’ has been permanently recalibrated.

First up, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa. Now, I’m not usually one for roughing it, but this wasn't roughing it. This was more like… glamping for kings and queens. My accommodation was a tent, yes, but one so ridiculously chic it probably had its own butler hiding behind the mosquito net. Think plush furnishings, private plunge pools overlooking the savannah, and the kind of silence that actually feels luxurious.

The safari itself was… well, it was spectacular. Waking up before dawn is usually a Herculean effort for me, but the promise of seeing a lion while sipping coffee on the back of an open top vehicle tends to provide a certain… motivation. And see them we did. Lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo – the full magnificent ensemble. Our guides were absolute legends, not only spotting these incredible creatures with uncanny accuracy but also sharing stories and insights that made the whole experience so much richer. There was one moment, watching a pride of lions lounging in the shade, that I felt a little bit like David Attenborough, minus the posh accent and the camera crew. It was humbling, really, to be in the presence of such raw power and beauty. And yes, I may have taken an embarrassing number of photos, most of which probably look identical to everyone else’s, but hey, memories!

After the thrill of the wild, it was time for the ultimate contrast: Lux* Grand Baie in Mauritius. If Sanbona was about exhilaration, this was pure, unadulterated bliss. Stepping off the plane felt like walking into a postcard. My villa was sheer perfection, with a private pool that was practically an Olympic swimming pool and views that would make a landscape painter weep.

The days melted into a delicious rhythm of waking up to the gentle sound of the ocean, indulging in breakfasts that were works of art (seriously, the fruit platters deserve their own exhibition), and spending hours either by the infinity pool or with my toes buried in the unbelievably soft sand. The food was exceptional, a glorious fusion of global flavours. I particularly enjoyed the poolside cocktails, which seemed to magically appear just as I was contemplating needing one. My biggest decision of the day often revolved around whether to have a massage or simply lie by the beach and listen to the waves. Tough life, I know.

This trip wasn't just about ticking boxes or seeing animals. It was about experiencing something truly special, something that felt a million miles away from the everyday. It was about the quiet luxury, the impeccable service, and the sheer wonder of being in such incredible environments. I returned feeling utterly rejuvenated, slightly sunburnt, and with a renewed appreciation for how truly magnificent our planet is, and how utterly decadent a holiday can be. If you ever get the chance, do it. Your soul, and your Instagram feed, will thank you.
