Seven days, and the Indian Ocean does most of the talking. You swap Mombasa for Zanzibar on what's billed as an exclusive luxury beach safari, though the phrase undersells how quiet it gets once the mainland is behind you. Private plunge pools. Sunset cocktails that appear before you've thought to ask. Wildlife close enough that you start noticing individual habits, and a staff of about thirty who seem to know your name by the second morning.

Mombasa comes first, two nights of markets and colonial-era streets, and the culture slot is real rather than a footnote. Then the transfer. A sleek air-conditioned vehicle, luggage already seen to, and a driver named Hassan who has made the run north more times than he can count. Somewhere past the last of the roadside stalls, lunch is laid out under a baobab: cold chicken, chapati, a flask of tea poured properly. I've always fussed about sand getting into a good cup of Earl Grey, and out here it will, so drink it before the wind picks up.

The coast that follows sits where jungle meets sea. Fewer lions than the plains, more birds: kingfishers, herons, the odd flash of something you can't name until a naturalist does it for you. Guided walks go out early, when the mangrove light is still flat across the water. A private dhow in the late afternoon holds maybe eight people and moves at the speed of the tide. You'll hear water against the hull and not much else.

Dinner is a multi-course affair under open sky, seafood landed that morning, lobster split and grilled with lime. The wine list runs past forty labels and the sommelier will steer you through it if you let him. Afterward, a soak in the villa's private Jacuzzi. Ocean sound carries up the slope, and a folded towel waits on the warm stone rim.

Zanzibar is a short flight, and the resort handles the crossing so you don't touch your bags. The beach is white sand for a good long stretch, the water turquoise and warm by ten in the morning. Snorkeling goes out to coral gardens where the fish are almost absurdly coloured, and green sea turtles turn up on the reef if the season's right. Stone Town takes an afternoon: spice markets, carved doors, alleys that fold back on themselves. Our guide there, Aisha, grew up three streets from the old fort and knows which shops still grind their own cloves by hand each week.

Cocktails at sunset on the terrace, the sky going orange then purple, and nobody in a hurry to move. The whole week resets something. You come back with a lighter head and a decent tan, and a small brass spice box from Aisha's cousin's stall in the market.
