Right then, buckle up, you lovely lot, because I’ve just returned from what can only be described as the safari experience of a lifetime. Forget your dusty tents and questionable camp coffee; this was Madikwe to Victoria Falls, and let me tell you, it was pure unadulterated indulgence. Seven days of opulence, wildlife wonders, and enough gin and tonics to float a small hippo.

Our adventure kicked off in Madikwe Game Reserve, a place that feels like it’s been plucked straight from a wildlife documentary, only with better thread counts. Our lodge, oh my. Picture this: a sprawling villa overlooking the savannah, a private plunge pool that was definitely bigger than my first flat, and a chef who clearly believes calories are just suggestions. Within hours of arriving, we were out on a game drive in a ridiculously comfortable open top vehicle. Our ranger, a chap named Thabo with eyes like a hawk and a smile that could charm a lion, pointed out everything from a herd of majestic elephants to a rather grumpy looking rhino who seemed unimpressed by our arrival. It’s humbling, you know, to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Makes you feel rather small, in the best possible way. And slightly guilty about that second slice of cake at lunch.

The days in Madikwe flowed like a well chilled champagne. Mornings were for the thrill of the hunt, albeit a photographic one, spotting lions lounging in the sun or a family of giraffes daintily munching on acacia leaves. Evenings were for sundowners as the African sky bled into a symphony of oranges and purples, followed by gourmet meals under a blanket of stars. I might have even managed a rather enthusiastic rendition of "Hakuna Matata" after a particularly fine bottle of South African Pinot Noir. Don’t judge.

Then, it was time to trade the whispers of the bush for the roar of the mighty Victoria Falls. A short, rather swanky, hop in a private charter plane later, and we were there. And wow. Just… wow. They call it Mosi oa Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders, and they’re not wrong. Standing on the edge, feeling the spray kiss your face and hearing that incredible rumble, it’s a visceral experience. We took a helicopter ride over the falls, which sounds a bit ostentatious, but honestly, the view from above is something else. Seeing the Zambezi River snake its way through the landscape and the sheer power of the water cascading down… it’s utterly breathtaking. You feel a profound connection to nature’s raw power.

Our accommodation near the falls was equally spectacular. Think colonial charm meets modern luxury, with impeccable service and views that would make a postcard jealous. We even did a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, spotting hippos and crocodiles from a safe, and very well stocked with snacks, distance. It was the perfect way to reflect on the incredible journey.

Seven days. Madikwe’s untamed beauty and Victoria Falls’ thundering might. It was a whirlwind of wildlife, luxury, and a healthy dose of self indulgence. If you’re looking for a safari that redefines the word “exclusive,” and you’re not afraid of a little bit of pampering alongside your pangolins, then this Madikwe to Vic Falls escapade is an absolute must. I’m already plotting my return, though I might have to pack a slightly looser pair of trousers.
