| Right then, fancy a bit of an adventure? Not just any old scramble in the bush, mind you. We’re talking proper, tip top, champagne and cheetahs kind of adventure. I recently had the distinct (and frankly, slightly unbelievable) pleasure of embarking on an eight day ultra lux fly in safari, whisking me from the wilds of Madikwe to the mighty Chobe. And let me tell you, it was more than just a holiday; it was an experience that made me question all my previous notions of "roughing it" (which apparently, until now, involved a slightly lumpy pillow at a four star hotel). So, what does one *do* on a safari like this? Well, you largely relax and let the magic happen, which, let's be honest, is my preferred mode of operation. The "fly in" bit is the first clue to the exclusivity. Forget bumpy drives in crowded jeeps for hours on end. We were hopping between these incredible lodges in tiny, rather stylish planes, soaring over landscapes that looked straight out of a nature documentary, only with better legroom. Madikwe was our first port of call. Picture this: a sumptuously appointed tent, more like a five star hotel room with canvas walls, complete with a four poster bed, a freestanding bath, and a private deck where I swear I saw a giraffe looking utterly jealous of my gin and tonic. The game drives here were phenomenal. Our guide, a chap named Themba who knew more about lions than I know about finding my car keys, would find us incredibly close encounters with wildlife. We saw wild dogs playing fetch with their pups, a leopard lounging nonchalantly in a tree (honestly, the sheer arrogance of some creatures!), and a herd of elephants so close I could practically smell their morning breath. And the meals! Oh, the meals. Think gourmet dining under the stars, with the distant roar of a lion as your soundtrack. I’m fairly certain I gained a stone, but who’s counting when you’re this happy? Then, it was off to Chobe. This place is famous for its elephants, and boy, does it deliver. We’re talking *thousands* of them. Cruising along the Chobe River on a private boat, surrounded by these gentle giants, was something else. They’d come right up to the boat, some even taking a drink, completely unfazed by our presence. It felt like we’d stumbled into their private pool party. The luxury continued here, of course. Another gorgeous lodge, impeccable service, and more delicious food. I started to worry I’d forget how to do anything for myself, like, say, buttering my own toast. The "ultra lux" aspect isn't just about plush furnishings and fancy food, though that’s certainly a delightful perk. It’s about the seamlessness of it all. Every transfer was smooth, every meal perfectly timed, and every wildlife sighting curated to be as breathtaking as possible. It’s about feeling utterly pampered while simultaneously being immersed in the raw beauty of nature. It’s about a level of service that anticipates your needs before you’ve even realised you have them. I found myself looking forward to the sundowner cocktails on the riverbanks, the guided bush walks where you learn fascinating little facts about the flora and fauna, and the sheer quiet of the evenings. Looking back, it was a week of pure indulgence, a glorious escape from the mundane. It made me realise that sometimes, treating yourself to something truly special isn't just about the tangible luxuries, but about the intangible feeling of being completely cared for, utterly awestruck, and just a little bit spoiled. And honestly, I’m already planning my next entirely unreasonable, incredibly luxurious safari. Just have to find my passport first. |
