| This is not just any safari. We’re talking the full, top-tier, ‘my butler knows my preferred champagne temperature’ kind of safari. Ten glorious days spent exploring the dramatic theatre of Victoria Falls and the wild heart of Hwange and Chobe National Parks. Honestly, if you’ve ever considered treating yourself to something truly epic, this is it. Forget roughing it; this is about luxuriating in the wild. We kicked things off at Victoria Falls, and let me tell you, it’s every bit as mind blowing as the postcards suggest. “The Smoke that Thunders” is no exaggeration. Standing on the edge, feeling the spray and hearing that roar… it’s a primal, awe inspiring thing. We stayed at a lodge that felt more like a boutique hotel that happened to have a rather impressive waterfall in its backyard. Think infinity pools overlooking the Zambezi, and gin and tonics delivered by staff who seemed to possess telepathic abilities for anticipating your needs. We even did a private helicopter flight over the falls. From up there, it’s like watching the earth literally split open and weep. Utterly spectacular, and surprisingly peaceful from 1000 feet up. Then it was time for the main event: the wildlife. First up, Hwange National Park. Now, Hwange is famous for its elephants, and boy, does it deliver. We’re talking herds so vast they look like moving grey carpets. Our lodge here was all canvas walls and polished wooden floors, with private plunge pools that were suspiciously tempting after a dusty game drive. The guides were phenomenal. These chaps know the bush like the back of their hand. They can spot a leopard lounging in a tree from a mile off, or identify a bird by its whisper of a call. My personal highlight? Watching a pride of lions casually stroll past our open top vehicle as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple. It felt less like a safari and more like a particularly privileged nature documentary, only with better snacks. Next, we crossed into Botswana for Chobe National Park. Chobe is renowned for its incredible elephant and buffalo populations, and the boat safaris along the Chobe River are a game changer. Picture this: you’re gliding along the water in a comfortable, private boat, a chilled drink in hand, as elephants wade in, youngsters splashing and playing. Hippos surface with a grunt, and crocodiles lurk like prehistoric logs. It’s a completely different perspective to see the animals interacting with the water. We had sundowner cocktails on the river, with the wildlife as our audience. Talk about an exclusive front row seat. Throughout the trip, the accommodation was simply divine. We’re talking opulent tented camps and lodges with exquisite food, fine wines, and staff who anticipated every whim. One evening, we had a private dinner under the stars, serenaded by the sounds of the bush. I swear, even the crickets sounded more melodious. Self reflection? Well, it’s hard not to feel a tad guilty when you’re sipping champagne while lions are, you know, being lions. But then you remember the conservation efforts these lodges support, and you tell yourself it’s a well deserved indulgence. Plus, the memories are priceless. It's the kind of trip that makes you feel incredibly grateful for the planet’s wonders and, let's be honest, a little bit spoiled rotten. If you’re looking for an adventure that’s as comfortable as it is thrilling, this is it. Pure magic. |
