Right then, let’s talk about escaping the mundane for a bit. Picture this: you, a ridiculously comfy safari vehicle, and the distinct possibility of spotting a lion without having to jostle for position with a hundred other tourists armed with selfie sticks. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? Well, I recently had the absolute pleasure of experiencing precisely that on a four day, malaria free, Big Five Mhoondoro safari. And let me tell you, ‘exclusive luxury’ doesn’t even begin to cover it.

From the moment we landed, it was clear this was going to be a different kettle of fish. No airport chaos, just a smooth transfer to our lodge, which frankly, looked more like a scene from a glossy magazine spread than a place to sleep. My ‘room’ was more of a suite, complete with a private plunge pool that offered a rather tempting view of the watering hole. I might have spent a good hour just contemplating the ethical implications of having a personal pool while elephants might be, you know, *working up a sweat*. Priorities, I suppose.

The actual safari part, though, was the main event. Our guide, a chap named Thabo with an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things wild and a rather dry wit, was brilliant. He had this knack for spotting a leopard lounging in a tree from what felt like a mile away. I, on the other hand, spent a fair amount of time squinting into bushes, convinced every rustle was a cheetah about to pounce, only to discover it was a particularly determined squirrel. Still, the thrill of the chase, or rather, the observation, was immense.

We did indeed see all of the Big Five: the majestic lion, the formidable elephant, the sturdy rhino, the elegant leopard, and the rather grumpy looking buffalo. Seeing them in their natural habitat, undisturbed and utterly magnificent, is an experience that stays with you. There was one particularly memorable moment when a family of elephants decided our safari vehicle was the perfect spot for a dust bath. I’m pretty sure I got more dust on myself than they did, but hey, I felt closer to nature, right? A truly immersive experience, if you count being coated in fine red earth as immersive.

Evenings were equally spectacular. Imagine sundowners on the open plains, with the sky painted in hues of orange and purple, the only soundtrack the distant calls of wild animals. Then, back at the lodge for gourmet meals that would put most Michelin starred restaurants to shame. I’m not ashamed to admit that my biggest concern each day was deciding between the fillet steak or the pan seared sea bass. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

This Mhoondoro safari was more than just a holiday; it was a complete reset. It’s the kind of trip that makes you reevaluate your life choices, like whether your office cubicle truly offers the same sense of wonder as a herd of wildebeest thundering across the savanna. Probably not. If you’re looking for an unforgettable, pampered adventure that delivers on every promise, and then some, an exclusive luxury safari is definitely something to consider. Just be prepared for a serious case of post holiday blues, and perhaps a newfound appreciation for good wine and even better company.
