| Right then, imagine this: you’ve done the usual holiday thing. You’ve seen the sights, sampled the local cuisine (sometimes with… interesting results), and generally had a perfectly pleasant time. But have you ever thought, “You know what I fancy? Sleeping in a ridiculously fancy tent in the middle of nowhere, with zebras practically knocking on the door and someone bringing me a G&T before I even ask”? If that sounds like your cup of tea, then let me tell you about the Zannier Omaanda safari in Namibia. Four days might not sound like a long time, but trust me, in the world of Omaanda, it’s an absolute eternity of indulgence. Forget roughing it. This is safaris for people who believe the only thing wild should be the animals, and even then, they’re probably quite well behaved. On arrival, you’re not greeted with a lukewarm buffet and a slightly damp towel. Oh no. You’re whisked away to your villa – and I use the term ‘villa’ very loosely, as it’s more like a palace dropped in the middle of the savannah. Think expansive views, private plunge pools (because why wouldn’t you?), and more plush furnishings than you’d find in a particularly decadent stately home. My personal favourite was the outdoor shower, where I spent a good ten minutes trying to convince myself I was part of a nature documentary, whilst simultaneously worrying about where my shampoo had gone. The main event, of course, is the game drives. These aren’t your average bumpy rides in a minibus. You’re in specially adapted 4x4s with your own expert guide, who, let’s be honest, knows more about the African bush than I know about the best way to load a dishwasher. They’ll spot a cheetah hiding in a bush that you’d swear was just a slightly fuzzy rock. You’ll witness herds of elephants lumbering past, seemingly unbothered by your presence, and if you’re lucky, you might even see a leopard slinking through the trees. The highlight for me? A family of giraffes gracefully munching on leaves, looking like they were attending a very exclusive, very tall, garden party. I felt rather underdressed in my hiking boots, if I’m honest. Beyond the thrilling wildlife encounters, Omaanda excels at the little touches. After a morning drive, imagine returning to find a delicious brunch laid out, complete with freshly squeezed juices and pastries that would make a Parisian baker weep. Evenings are equally spectacular. Sundowners are a ritual here, enjoyed with panoramic views of the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in hues I didn’t even know existed. Then, it’s on to a gourmet dinner, where the food is as memorable as the scenery. I’m pretty sure my waiter could have navigated the entire savannah by the aroma of the lamb shank alone. What I appreciated most was the sense of peace. Away from the constant hum of everyday life, with only the distant roar of a lion or the call of a nightjar for company, you can actually hear yourself think. Or, more likely, you can think about how wonderful it is not to have to think about anything at all. It’s a kind of forced relaxation, but the best kind. You realise that true luxury isn't just about fancy things, it's about experiences, about being utterly present, and about being incredibly well looked after. Four days might sound short, but at Omaanda, it’s a perfect, unforgettable slice of pampered paradise. |
