| Right then, eight days of pure unadulterated bliss, folks! Forget your everyday worries, your overflowing inboxes, and the eternal mystery of where your other sock has wandered off to. We're talking about a proper posh safari, a proper escape, focusing on Durban, Bayala, and St. Lucia. And when I say posh, I mean *posh*. We’re not roughing it here, not even a little bit. Let’s start in Durban. Now, I’ll admit, my initial thought of Durban involved a slightly more… enthusiastic… approach to beachwear. But this is the luxury version, so think chic waterfront strolls, perhaps a private yacht for sunset cocktails, and definitely a spa treatment that leaves you feeling like you've been gently serenaded by a herd of contented wildebeest. The food, oh the food. Expect Michelin star worthy cuisine served with views that could make a grumpy badger crack a smile. And the shopping? Well, let’s just say my credit card shed a small tear of joy, but it was a happy tear, I promise. From the coast, we're off to Bayala. And this is where the serious wildlife spotting begins, but in the most comfortable way imaginable. Picture this: you're sipping a perfectly chilled gin and tonic on your private deck, a gentle breeze rustling the acacia trees, and then, a majestic elephant ambles into view. No need to crane your neck from a dusty vehicle; you're right there, witnessing nature's grandeur unfold from your own personal paradise. Our lodge was less "rustic hut" and more "architectural masterpiece seamlessly integrated into the bush." Honestly, I half expected a butler to appear with a silver tray of lion-shaped canapés. The activities are, as you'd expect, top tier. Game drives in open top 4x4s, naturally, but with experienced rangers who know their stuff and can point out a leopard from a mile away, all while explaining it in a calm, reassuring voice. You won’t be jostling for a view with a hundred other people. This is intimate, exclusive. Think of it as a private viewing of the greatest show on Earth. And for those of us who are more inclined to observe from a distance (and perhaps with a pair of rather expensive binoculars), there are also guided bush walks. You might not be running with the gazelles, but you’ll certainly feel connected to the rhythm of the wild. Then there’s St. Lucia, where the iSimangaliso Wetland Park awaits. Hippos are practically celebrities here, and you can get quite close to them from the safety and comfort of a boat cruise. Imagine floating along, the sun warming your face, the water alive with these magnificent, albeit slightly menacing, creatures. It’s a surreal experience, watching them yawn or playfully splash. And the birdlife! If you’re a birder, you’ll be in absolute heaven. Even I, who generally considers a pigeon a fairly exciting avian encounter, found myself pointing and exclaiming at the sheer variety of feathered friends. What struck me most about this trip, beyond the sheer beauty of the landscape and the incredible wildlife, was the seamless blend of luxury and wilderness. You’re experiencing the raw, untamed Africa, but with all the creature comforts you could possibly desire. It’s a rather delightful paradox, isn’t it? To be so close to nature, yet so utterly pampered. I found myself reflecting quite a bit on how fortunate I was to be able to witness such a spectacular part of the world in such a remarkable way. It’s certainly changed my perspective on what a "safari" can truly be. And my sock drawer? Still a mystery, but at least I have a newfound appreciation for a perfectly brewed cup of coffee while watching a giraffe graze. Cheers to that. |
